Somerville says Forth Ports must think again on Leith Biomass Plant

Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP (Lothians)(SNP) welcomed today’s statements by Environment Minister Roseanna Cunningham suggesting that the Scottish Government sees the role of Biomass Energy being confined to small scale plants which primarily produce heat. The Minister was speaking in response to Parliamentary questions from Ms Somerville.

The MSP stated:

"I’m delighted to see Roseanna Cunningham repeat recent statements which suggest the Scottish Government sees Biomass developing as a source of renewable heat rather than electricity, and only on a small local scale. Such a policy would appear totally incompatible with Forth Energy proposals for a massive Biomass plant at Leith docks that would primarily be generating electricity.

What Ms Cunningham is saying is also consistent with recent research showing that Biomass plants currently being proposed for the UK would require an amount of fuel equivalent to the entire current world market in wood. That just isn’t realistic. I’m greatly heartened by today’s answers".
